Zusammenfassung
Das Selbstkonzept ist wesentlich für die Beschreibung von Menschen. Autoren aus individualistischen Kulturen haben verschiedene Definitionen und Messungen des Selbst angeboten, wobei sie die Idee teilen, dass das Selbst eine soziale Einheit ist, die aus den ständigen dialektischen Beziehungen zu anderen hervorgeht. Es gibt jedoch große Schwierigkeiten, Definitionen und Instrumente, die in einem Ökosystem entwickelt wurden, zur Beschreibung der Völker aus anderen Kulturen zu verwenden. In Mexiko schrieben Philosophen im neunzehnten und frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhundert über den Charakter der Mexikaner. Die allgemeine Schlussfolgerung war, dass bei den Mexikanern ein Minderwertigkeitskomplex vorlag, der sich ständig mit den Europäern verglich. Um das Selbstkonzept der Mexikaner empirisch zu untersuchen, wurden in Brainstorming-Sitzungen fünf Dimensionen identifiziert: physisch, sozial, emotional, ethisch und beruflich. Diese Dimensionen finden sich auch in der universellen Literatur, was bedeutet, dass die Dimensionen des Selbstkonzepts allgemeine Kategorien sind, die in allen Kulturen gefunden werden. Die ökologisch gültige Definition und Verhaltensweisen, die jede Dimension repräsentieren könnten, könnten jedoch unterschiedlich sein. Um dies zu testen, boten die Teilnehmer Adjektive als Antwort auf jede Stimuluskategorie an. Die resultierenden Attribute wurden mit Antonymen auf einer semantischen Differentialskala mit dem Konzept „Ich bin“ festgelegt. Die Faktorenanalyse der Antworten ergibt kultursensitive und relevante Faktoren. Das Ergebnis ist, dass das mexikanische Selbst tiefgreifend sozial affiliativ ist und auf fließenden, freundlichen persönlichen Beziehungen basiert. Die Konzeptualisierung des mexikanischen Selbst, die mit Bottom-up-Methoden ermittelt wurde, ist äquivalent und korreliert stark mit den mexikanischen Typen, die in früheren Untersuchungen unter Verwendung der historisch-soziokulturellen Prämissen als Grundlage ermittelt wurden, was die konvergente Validität des Konstrukts bietet. Theoretisch kongruente Beziehungen zu anderen psychologischen Variablen werden ebenfalls in dem Kapitel vorgestellt.
