Abstract
This chapter aims to review the main aspects and particularities of rabbit physiology. Several specific physiological features result from their adaptation to the environment, which are evident in both wild and domestic rabbits. Rabbit behavior and sensory system, thermoregulation and integument, cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, reproductive, and digestive systems, and digestion physiology are discussed. Rabbits are induced ovulators but are influenced by environmental cues such as photoperiod and nutrition and are mostly sensitive to heat stress. They are highly efficient food convertors that promote the phenomenon of cecotrophy, which is a characteristic of lagomorphs. These main particularities are of relevance for understanding the needs that must be taken into consideration when breeding and caring for this species.
