Abstract

People are safer when law enforcement and private security work together. This chapter explores how public-private partnerships can provide a complete solution that addresses many of the challenges facing law enforcement today. Featuring multiple real-world case studies and seasoned perspectives from top leaders in security and law enforcement, it illuminates the success factors in existing partnerships and proposes innovative new areas for collaboration. It demonstrates how public-private security partnerships can provide significant value in budgets, recruiting, responding to mental health and drug crises, airport or campus security, prisoner transport, transit security and many other service areas. Additionally, it offers guidance for improving the functioning and effectiveness of PPPs, as well as considerations for budget, jurisdictional issues and legal liability – all with actionable pathways that any public and private force can follow to achieve unprecedented levels of service and efficiency in today’s rigorous social and budgetary environment. The result: a win-win for all law enforcement organizations and the communities they serve.
