Abstract

The surgical management of acute complicated diverticulitis involves a complex decision-making progress. Historically, staged procedures were performed to mitigate the risk of anastomotic leak and its associated complications. However, more recently, there has been a push for primary anastomosis even in the setting of Hinchey III or IV diverticulitis. This chapter summarizes the evidence for Hartmann’s procedure vs primary anastomosis for complicated diverticulitis.
