Abstract

Nutrients are vital for producer/plankton growth, but the surplus of nutrients in aquatic systems can have several harmful health and environmental impacts. An excess of nutrients – mainly nitrogen and phosphorus – in the water system starts the development of eutrophication – decreasing the total dissolved oxygen of aquatic systems and even releasing it in some cases. So nitrogen and phosphorus measurement is very essential for any type of management system of aquatic bodies. The chapter describes the brief idea of nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, silicate, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus in natural water and their measurement method. It also discusses the general spectroscopic principle for the measurement of aquatic parameters.
