Abstract

Sample collection is the beginning of the measurement of any aquatic parameter. Careful analyses of these samples were carried out to provide empirical data that can be correctly understood to deliver a new understanding of ecosystem processes and the influences of human actions on environmental structures. However, this understanding would be flawed without the use of effective and appropriate sampling techniques. The chapter provides different steps and types involved in the sampling of different water quality parameters. It also delivers a description of different types of samplers, filtration techniques, depth profiling, etc. A short description of the common preservative used for specific types of aquatic parameters is also explained in this chapter. Moreover, the chapter also explains several filtration techniques for different aquatic parameters including types of filter paper used, e.g., total suspended solid (TSM), volatile suspended solid (VSS), nutrients, dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), chlorophyll, chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM).
