Abstract

The implementation of telemedicine has grown rapidly over the past 20 years, resulting in the facilitation of mental healthcare services to marginalized and underserved populations who may not otherwise receive treatment. With regard to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), telemedicine has been used in the assessment, treatment, and management of ADHD. Although a small body of research supported telemedicine for management of ADHD in children and adolescents prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was limited research examining the implementation of telemedicine for management of adult ADHD. The COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing adoption of public safety measures have resulted in heightened interest in and broader implementation of telemedicine services for individuals with ADHD, including guidelines for practitioners. This chapter reviews the available research on telemedicine procedures for the assessment and treatment of ADHD. A total of 24 peer-reviewed publications were reviewed, which examined telemedicine in the management of ADHD in the context of assessments, pharmacological consultation and management, psychosocial and behavioral interventions, and combined pharmacological and behavioral interventions. A summary of the existing literature is presented, along with a discussion of gaps in the literature and recommendations for practitioners.
