Abstract
This chapter examines issues related to digital performance and pedagogy, reflecting on the Inside Outside and Beyond project that became one of the catalysts for the development of digital displacement. The research enquiry examined the influence of the lockdown restrictions on the inclusion, exclusion and sense of belonging for young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds who had recently arrived in Dublin. We argue that the participants experienced a sense of belonging to a ‘digitally displaced’ learning community as a result of the condition of a global lockdown. We highlight how this digital displacement affected the dynamics of online and group liveness, and arts-based online practice.

Notes
- 1.
In this chapter, whenever there is a reference to a lockdown, we mean the lockdown that took place from 27 March to 29 June 2020 in Ireland.
- 2.
The young people’s guardians/social workers prohibited them from appearing on video, deeming it unsafe due to the young people having fled their countries for political reasons.
- 3.
Pseudonyms have been used to protect participants’ privacy.
- 4.
Eid-al-Fitr is a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to mark the end of Ramadan. In Greta’s neighbourhood, it was traditional for children under fifteen to knock at doors for treats at sunset, and hence her comparison to Halloween in Ireland.
