Update in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder affecting communication and social interactions, and associated with repetitive and restricted behaviors or interests.

Much has been learned over the past decade about possible risk factors and etiopathogenesis, and factors that can complicate or delay diagnosis, including co-morbidities, female sex, and intellectual functioning.

Treatment also can be complicated by co-morbidities and intellectual level. Early recognition and timely appropriate intervention can positively impact prognosis.
