Update in Pediatrics

Abstract

The adolescent and young adult years are a dynamic period of significant physical, emotional, and social change and thus present many unique healthcare needs. While the definition of adolescence can vary by culture, it is generally understood to be a unique period of development between the beginning of puberty (between ages 8 and 10) and young adulthood (between ages 19 and 24). The leading causes of morbidity and mortality of adolescents and young adults are preventable, including firearm-related injury, mood and anxiety disorders, and sexually transmitted diseases. Appropriate screening and treatment for these issues can improve the quality of life for teens and young adults. Adolescents and young adults often fall in a gap between pediatric and adult health care requiring nuanced care different from what they may have received as a pediatric patient, and it is important for pediatric and adult clinicians to recognize the unique needs of this population.

In this chapter, we will review best practices for the care of adolescents and young adults in the areas of adolescent development, sexual health, substance abuse, and transition to adult care. We also discuss topics of adolescent health that have seen significant advancements in recent years including psychosocial and risk assessment along with media and technology use.
