Abstract
Police training is training for deployment, and as such a globally encountered institution within police organizations. It intends to equip police officers with the skills needed for frontline policing, especially (but not only) for coping with conflict and violence. Thus, police training is a pedagogical endeavour: police trainers teach and police officers learn within this setting. In this chapter, the internationally known and established “constraints-led approach” (CLA) is introduced as a promising pedagogical framework for the design of learning environments in police training. It is argued that the CLA’s conceptual architecture is particularly suited to the specific needs and goals of police training as an institutionalized setting of teaching and learning. The CLA not only provides police trainers with practical guidance for the design and creation of learning environments representative of operational demands, but also allows for a reflection of its application along the standards from which it is derived. Since the profession of police trainer is a pedagogical profession, the CLA contributes to the empowerment of those in charge of police training.
