Abstract

Ventilation tubes, also called grommets or tubes, are used in the treatment of both recurrent acute otitis media (rAOM) and secretory otitis media (SOM). It is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in children worldwide. The effect is however debated, and there are great differences in the use of ventilation tubes in different countries.

Complications are few, but scarring and sclerosis of the tympanic membrane are frequently seen, and perforations are more frequent in ears treated with ventilation tubes but still very few.
