Textbook of Otitis Media

Abstract

Otorhinolaryngology is a specialty that examines regions with difficult access, but technology has brought a series of improvements in the diagnosis process for the ear, nose, and larynx. For otology, more specifically, otoscopes, microscopes, and endoscopes with different angled optics offer varied benefits that will be discussed in this chapter.

Also, studies based on these different ways to examine the middle ear have allowed for new perspectives on the study of chronic otitis media pathogenesis. These studies provided the basis for the proposition of a new classification for middle ear cholesteatomas and tympanic membrane perforations, which will also be presented.

Finally, this chapter aims to help the reader assemble their own equipment for assistance or research purposes. It is important to emphasize that, at present, the availability of equipment on the market is endless, but we aim to share tricks and techniques that we have learned in our group’s last 20 years of experience.
