Integrating Multidisciplinary Treatment for Advanced Renal Cell Carcinoma

Abstract

Palliative care is a multidisciplinary mode of medical care that concerns physical, psychological, spiritual, emotional, cultural, and ethico-legal aspects of the management of severe disease. This chapter seeks to examine and more clearly define the role of palliative care in the context of a patient with kidney cancer. It includes concepts such as primary and subspecialist palliative care. Next, the chapter examines multiple models of palliative care provision, including provider-based and issue-based models. Current evidence for the integration of palliative care is reviewed, leading to the definition of challenges and obstacles to integration of palliative care. Finally, the chapter highlights potential opportunities for integration of palliative care in clinical practice and in research, paying special attention to patient needs and provider skills to ensure patient needs are appropriately met.
