Abstract
In this chapter we examine how African societies rose up again, after the initial knockdown of colonialism, and launched independence movements, in fact, an unforeseen by-product of the ideas which Europeans spread themselves through the newly established education systems, and of the enlisting of African soldiers for their own wars. It begins by exploring the well-known Scramble for Africa, which was the invasion, annexation, division and colonisation of most of Africa by seven Western European powers during a short period known to historians as New Imperialism (between 1881 and 1914). It then explored how this imperialism functioned as well as how it was resisted, giving rise to the movement towards independence known as the ‘struggle’ for independence.
