Epistemology of the ‘Laje’: Notes from Favela Rooftops

Abstract

This chapter departs from a dialogue with Eve Sedgwick’s “Epistemology of the closet” and Ananya Roy’s criticism of the theorizations aimed at deciphering the megacities of the Global South. We propose an “epistemology of the laje (favela rooftop)” having the “Rio de Janeiro favela” as its main reference. Our hypothesis is that the laje, both in empirical and conceptual terms, destabilizes long-stand dualities: favela versus formal city, private space versus public space, legal versus illegal, universal versus vernacular, horizontal versus vertical.
