Abstract

Infections of the central nervous system can be especially terrifying. Traditional tools at the disposal of infectious disease physicians, such as the history and clinical exam, may be unavailable due to altered mental status. Collaboration with neurologists, neurosurgeons, spinal surgeons, and otolaryngologists can be key in both diagnosis and management of head and neck infections. In fact, there are some specialists with training in both neurology and infectious diseases in the field of NeuroID. This chapter will highlight just a few common questions for the consultant in the rich field of head and neck infectious diseases.

We will start by discussing the diagnosis and management of meningitis, including when to sample the cerebral spinal fluid. We will then explore the management of brain abscesses. From that point, we will review infections across head and neck anatomy, including skull base osteomyelitis, infections in otolaryngology, and spinal cord disease.
