Abstract

GI bleeding can be controlled with minimally invasive techniques outside the operating room. After initial resuscitation of the patient, endoscopy and embolization are mainstays of diagnosis and treatment of a GI bleed. Surgical options of treatment are the last line of control of hemorrhage. Since surgery is typically reserved for the hemodynamically unstable, laparoscopic techniques are rarely utilized. The acute care surgeon though is capable of employing endoscopic techniques in these situations though.
