Abstract
The preoperative visit is a vital aspect in the preparation, planning, and ultimately the outcome of major head and neck reconstructive surgery. The preoperative appointment is a time to educate the patient on the intricacies of the perioperative period and specific nuances of the planned surgery and most importantly set appropriate expectations. Patients who have adequate understanding and realistic expectations demonstrate better outcomes overall. Due to the complexity and multidisciplinary involvement of ancillary services in the management of a head and neck patient, this chapter outlines a systematic approach to the preoperative patient discussion. The aim of this chapter is to provide a surgeon with a guide for a comprehensive yet targeted discussion with the patient to facilitate setting appropriate expectations.
