Abstract
The arrival of COVID-19 in Latin America revealed the permeability of its prisons and the structural conditions that affect both inmates and prison staff. Within this framework, an inter-institutional project was developed between the Research Group in Forensic and Penitentiary Psychology of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and the National Penitentiary Institute, aimed at understanding and mitigating the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of the people in the Peruvian penitentiary system. This article details the action-research process and the results of the three lines of action developed in the first eight months. Perspectives from which to (re)think psychology as a discipline in an emergency context and the scope of mental health care actions at the institutional level are discussed.
