Psychology and Covid-19 in the Americas

Abstract

Due to the enforced physical isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we analyzed how individuals used online games to maintain everyday social interactions. To do so, we mapped news stories aired in digital media that highlighted online game consumption during the quarantine. The findings presented in this chapter were confirmed by Google Trends data, which indicated a significant increase in activities with this field, expressing the facilitating role of technologies for the maintenance of this habit, and for the creation and increase of new media for online gaming. Adjustments to the pandemic context are described: adaptation of rule systems; emergence of meta-thematic games; creative use for the maintenance of shared rituals; and use for therapeutic purposes. We concluded that there was an expansion in the ludic function of online games, which showed their potential to promote social interactions among users and facilitate coping during the COVID-19 pandemic.
