Abstract
Differences between hematology/oncology and palliative care have long been emphasized. Hematologists/oncologists focus on understanding and treating blood diseases or cancers. And while stereotypes of hematologists/oncologists exist, their unquestionable goal is to provide cancer-directed treatment to their patients to save or extend their lives in the face of a life-threatening condition. Stereotypes of palliative care similarly exist—a “soft” practice inconsistent with curative medicine and reserved for when “there is nothing left to do.” In reality, hematology/oncology and palliative care clinicians have a shared goal: to help individuals with a serious illness live as well and as long as possible. Most importantly, these fields are complementary and are far better together than when practiced in silos. This effective collaboration between hematology/oncology and palliative care inspired this textbook, which we hope will serve as a valuable resource for clinicians caring for individuals with a hematologic malignancy or nonmalignant hematologic condition.
