Abstract
Examination of the knee for specific conditions is outlined in this highly illustrated chapter. Conditions covered include osteoarthritis of the knee, meniscal lesions, knee ligament injuries, dislocation of the patella, extensor mechanism failure, Osgood Schlatter’s disease, osteochondritis dissecans of the knee and osteonecrosis of the knee. For each condition topics such as signs, symptoms, suggested investigations and prognosis are covered in a systematic manner.

The Q-angle is defined as the angle between a line drawn from the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) to the centre of the patella and a line drawn from the centre of the patella to the tibial tubercle (Fig. 9.8). A Q-angle greater than 15° may cause the patella to sublux laterally during quadriceps contraction.
