Abstract
In this chapter specific conditions of the lumbar spine are outlined including information on how to examine a patient for these conditions. For each condition information is presented in clear and simple dot points with anatomic classification, symptoms, physical signs, appropriate investigations and treatment outlined. Topics covered include intervertebral disc prolapse, lumbar sprain and strain, lumbar spinal stenosis, cauda equina syndrome (CES), spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis, facet joint arthropathy, ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and infections (osteomyelitis and discitis).

The literature suggests that the longest nerve in the body is the sciatic nerve which forms in the sacral plexus and extends all the way down the lower extremity and into the foot. As noted above, the sciatic nerve divides into its terminal branches in the region of the popliteal fossa, where it ceases to be the sciatic nerve.
