Applying a Cultural Analysis Framework Before Engaging in Large-Scale Learning Design Within Yunnan Province, China

Toward Inclusive Learning Design

Abstract

Culture is a complex construct that underlies, helps explain, and influences all that we think and do. Learning designers must take greater care to delineate and understand a range of factors that impinge on and shape human culture as a precursor to designing effective learning environments for varied purposes. Influenced by the work of the French Annales School of historiography, we articulate a cultural analysis framework for learning designers to apply before engaging in large-scale learning interventions. We apply this framework with reference to our intended work across Yunnan Province in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) with attention to five components: geography and climate, history and anthropology, economy and society, politics and education administration, and management styles and learning.
