Abstract
Adult and pediatric obesity rates have declined in recent years, but serious racial/ethnic obesity disparities persist. Multilevel factors affect overweight and obesity risk, and its root causes are not as straightforward as energy intake and expenditure. Clinic-based approaches are one strategy to reduce obesity disparities; however, it is recommended that such approaches be used in combination with other intervention approaches. Using such a multidisciplinary approach supports interventions in addressing the multilevel factors that influence overweight/obesity risk. Clinic-community partnerships are one multidisciplinary approach to best address these multilevel factors. Clinic-community partnerships can help address primary care physician barriers to obesity prevention and treatment delivery while simultaneously providing a more holistic approach to obesity prevention and treatment by addressing contextual barriers to reducing overweight/obesity risks. Primary care physicians can provide individual-level obesity prevention and treatment and provide referrals to other healthcare personnel such as registered dieticians, in addition to providing referrals to local community resources that can support a patient’s ability to change their obesity-related behavior.
