Abstract
The Marxist-inspired education of workers to achieve power characterized the workers’ movements in the Spanish-speaking Southern Cone at the start of the twentieth century. This chapter explores the presence of Marxism in the workers’ education conducted in Chile during the first quarter of the twentieth century by Luis Emilio Recabarren (1876–1924), a prolific journalist, workers’ organizer, and founder of working-class parties. In this context, there is an effort to show the connections with Argentinian socialism and to highlight the influence of European Marxist thought on the education of Chilean workers, as it was conducted in their organizations and press toward the independence, empowerment, agency, and ultimate triumph of the working class. Particular attention is given in the chapter to the Marxist development of Luis Emilio Recabarren’s thought, through a close reading and analysis of his major essays and press writings.
