Controversies in Thyroid Nodules and Differentiated Thyroid Cancer

Abstract

Thyroidectomy is one of the most commonly performed operations in the United States, with nearly 200,000 operations performed annually. Surgical outcomes depend on a number of factors including surgeon volume. This chapter delineates the multiple impacts that surgeon volume has on outcomes for thyroidectomy. Outcomes affected by surgeon volume include complication rates, oncologic outcomes such as recurrence, node dissection yields, quality of life, and costs.
