Organ Crosstalk in Acute Kidney Injury

Abstract

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is defined as a state of reduction of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of less than a week of duration. In 2012, KDIGO guidelines settled the diagnostic criteria to uniform its labeling. It is a highly prevalent condition in critically ill patients and hospital settings and it has short-and long-term clinical consequences. It can be classified according to the time frame, the severity of the injury, and the pathophysiology of the insult. There is no effective treatment once it develops and therefore efforts should be centered on prevention.
