Abstract
Acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema (ACPE) and Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are a common cause of acute respiratory failure (ARF) in patients presenting to the emergency department.
The NIV refers to the administration of mechanical ventilation without using an invasive airway (endotracheal or tracheostomy tube), it can be provided in the form of continues positive airway pressure (CPAP) and Bilevel mode using face or nasal mask.
This chapter address the use of NIV in emergency medicine.
