Abstract

Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) has been widely used in acute respiratory failure of different origins; in fact, it can effectively ameliorate gas exchange thanks to the reduction of work of breathing and the favorable effect of positive end expiratory pressure on both respiratory and cardiovascular systems. These actions could be beneficially used in the palliative setting to improve symptoms as dyspnea in end-of-life patients suffering from chronic respiratory pathologies or neoplastic diseases. The role of NIV in palliative care has been explored in many studies but no definitive conclusions can be so far drawn because of the complexity and the variety of settings in which NIV has been employed.
