Neurological Disorders in Pregnancy

Abstract

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory and neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system. While individuals of all ages are affected by MS, it is more commonly diagnosed in young adults and its prevalence is significantly increased in women compared to men. More than half of women diagnosed with MS will develop the disease during their reproductive years. MS does not decrease fertility rates. However, pregnancy may have a significant effect on disease activity. The clinician has a key role in educating the patient appropriately and alleviating any concerns surrounding MS and pregnancy. It will also be necessary to consider MS treatment modification prior and during pregnancy.
