Abstract
Barbed or cogged threads can be utilized to rejoin tissue that has become separated due to increase in laxity with loss of collagen and elastin during the aging process. For example, in the midface, the lower medial cheeks tend to separate from the lateral upper cheek and fall forward and inferiorly causing the appearance of jowls. This chapter will outline the steps required for proper technique that can be utilized anywhere that insertion of barbed or cog threads is desired. A list of recommended supplies is provided. Proper technique whereby approximation of tissue is performed to obtain a sufficiently “lifted” appearance of tissue is outlined. Some tips and tricks are provided that can help to develop the manual skill necessary to perform the insertion with ease. An instructional video of thread lift procedures on a patient is included with the textbook that provides a demonstration of the technique. Photos of the skin are included that demonstrate the importance of the approximation maneuver to obtain a lifted appearance.
