Abstract

Threads or barbed suture for cosmetic procedures have evolved over the last 2 decades. Although they had a precarious genesis, they have become fine-tuned instruments that have become an ingenious contribution to the quest for extending a more youthful appearance. The most significant development in threads for cosmetic use has been its evolution as an absorbable suture rather than a permanent one. Threads are primarily made now with an absorbable compound such as polydioxanone that dissolves in the tissues after approximately 6 months while still providing results that are apparent for 1–2 years due to collagen produced before thread absorption. This avoids the long-term complications associated with permanent sutures and allows for fresh threads to address aging as it progresses.
