Character Strengths and Abilities Within Disabilities

Abstract

Of all the problem areas and disabilities discussed in this book, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent and most discussed in many societies. Yet, it is one of the least studied in regard to character strengths and strengths-based approaches. The aim of this chapter is to explore the emerging findings with strengths and to offer theoretical advancements and applications therein. This includes consideration of dimensional approaches to ADHD which aligns with the dimensionality of character strengths, and practical applications involving ways to integrate character strengths into existing ADHD treatment; targeting character strengths in people with ADHD; deploying character strengths interventions; and the character strengths of the practitioner. The chapter does not limit the discussion to any particular age. The central thesis of the chapter is the argument that a deeper focus on character strengths can provide substantial potential for people to better understand ADHD, boost well-being, and facilitate greater resilience for those suffering, their families and supports, and professionals that work with them.
