Abstract

On the heels of an era where patient safety became a core focus of quality care, this chapter introduces foundational learnings regarding the imperative of a health equity lens in patient safety. Social determinants originating beyond the physical walls of the health care environment are explored along with historical and contemporary discussion of interpersonal and systemic discrimination within health care, which adversely affect patient safety and quality of care. Clinical vignettes and corresponding analyses provide vivid context for these learnings, preparing the reader to integrate health equity into patient safety processes and systems.
