Abstract
Green human resource management (HRM) is an innovative approach that is essential to build a sustainable organization. Using resource-based theory, the purpose of this study is to determine the level of awareness of green HRM in the manufacturing industry, the adoption of green HRM practices, and the outcome of adopting green HRM in the Malaysian manufacturing context. Using qualitative research, this study collects data from HR directors and managers of four large manufacturing companies in Malaysia through semistructured interviews. The findings show that the understanding of the concept of green HRM is still low, but green training is the most widely adopted green HRM practice in manufacturing companies. In addition, adopting green HRM may contribute to a company’s economic, environmental, and social performance. This study provides insights on green HRM for academics and practitioners involved in an environmentally sensitive sector in emerging economies.
