Improving Person-Centered Innovation of Nursing Care

Abstract

The foundation of nursing care should be based on the best available evidence, also known as evidence-based practice. This approach has significantly improved the effectiveness and targeting of care. However, we must now move beyond simply relying on evidence-based practice and start considering the unique needs and preferences of each patient or client. This is the essence of person-centered or patient-centered care.

While it may seem that person-centered care is at odds with evidence-based practice, this is not necessarily the case. The focus of evidence-based practice is often on the needs of groups and populations, while person-centered care is focused on meeting the individual needs of each patient. Ultimately, the goal of nursing care is to achieve patient outcomes that are important, meaningful, and valuable to the individual.

It is important to remember that a good outcome is only good if it is aligned with the patient’s goals and values. As a nurse, it is crucial to approach patient care from their perspective, rather than just relying on the best available evidence. By starting from the patient’s needs, we can ensure that our care and treatment plans are tailored to meet their unique needs and preferences.
