Abstract
Imperial Oil is the Canadian arm of Exxon Mobil, much like its Exxon counterpart, which could have taken serious action to address the climate crisis. In the 1970s, the company launched a research program focused on the issue of climate change, demonstrating at least on the surface some engagement on this issue, outlining suggestions and proposals for addressing the problem. However, steps to address the industry's impact on the climate were connected to the campaign that would undermine, delay, and obstruct climate action. This chapter first lays out the historical context of Canada’s political economy and how this would confirm that CCCM organizations would operate. Examples of think tank networks, advocacy groups, campaigns, and media attention that sought to shape public opinion and policy decisions follow.
