Radiologic Imaging of the Ankle

Evaluation and Surgical Management of the Ankle

Abstract

When evaluating the ankle, diagnostic imaging is critical for accurate diagnosis and guiding the appropriate treatment. Initial radiographic imaging typically involves three standard views of the ankle joint. When necessary, special radiographic views or stress radiographs can be obtained. If indicated, there are a variety of additional imaging modalities at the provider’s disposal. These include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, and nuclear medicine scans. Each imaging technique has its advantages, draw backs, and specific indications. It is important to understand which studies to utilize, in order to efficiently and accurately work up the patient.
