Abstract
Literature and epistemological reviews of the construction of the desertification concept demonstrate that the concept was forged to portray the problems of drying soils and expansion of deserts in the Sahel, generalizing similar occurrences to desertification in the rest of the planet. This context demands regional and local studies in search of better knowledge of the environmental problems of areas affected by this problem. For the bases of this question, a more and better understanding of the concepts and main characteristics of deserts and the desertification phenomenon, desert classifications, gauging the areas affected by desertification in the world, and associated causes, are indispensable. From this, recognize the extent of the drylands of the globe and their geographic distribution, in absolute and relative terms, for greater accuracy of scientific research. Based on this, the international experiences and impacts resulting from desertification at a planetary, regional, and local level are better recorded.
