Abstract

Difficulties remain to consider a consensual definition of desertification until today, even with the world climate crisis and increase in droughts. The difficulty in defining represents an obstacle to confronting the problem globally. Many ambiguities, criticisms, considerations, and disregards about desertification have been raised since the pioneering ideas on desertification in the middle of the last century to the formulation of its official definition at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) or Eco’92. These aspects denote the complexity of the problem in its academic and scientific, political, social, cultural, environmental, fallacious, and sensationalist faces, in the face of global environmental problems, just to mention the most common.
