External Beam Radiotherapy for Nose Vestibule Malignancies

Malignancies of the Nasal Vestibule

Abstract

Nose vestibule malignancies are rare, and randomized/prospective studies on available treatments are not available. External beam radiotherapy (EBRT), among other treatment options, has an acknowledged role as primary treatment, especially for small lesions, and in the postoperative setting, both alone and in combination with brachytherapy and chemotherapy. Nowadays, modern techniques that include IMRT and volumetric-modulated radiation therapy (VMAT) are routinely used in most centers. Target volumes are highly dependent on tumor characteristics and, in our opinion, the predictable spread patterns. The acute morbidity with EBRT is usually mild and well tolerated while late toxicities are rarely reported. Cosmetic results after EBRT are usually good, while the impact on smell function and mucociliary function can seriously impact the quality of life.
