Abstract
The biliary system transports bile from the liver to the duodenum. Proximal extrahepatic biliary tree is supplied by the right hepatic artery and cystic artery, while the distal common bile duct is supplied by the gastroduodenal and pancreaticoduodenal arteries. There is significant congenital anatomic variation, rarely anomalies, in the biliary tree. The most common pathology in this system is related to cholelithiasis that can result in a range of conditions from biliary colic and cholecystitis to choledocholithiasis and ascending cholangitis. Less commonly, functional disorders and malignancy are seen in the biliary system. Biliary malignancies are associated with especially poor prognosis.
