Upper Airway Disorders and Noninvasive Mechanical Ventilation

Abstract

The physiology and management of hypoventilation in neuromuscular diseases are the hallmarks of this area of research, as the consequent respiratory failure constitutes the major cause of morbidity and mortality of these patients. However, the impact of the upper airway disorders in the pathophysiology and noninvasive ventilation (NIV) effectiveness is less established. In this chapter, we will review the disturbances of the upper airway in neuromuscular disorders and explore their interaction with mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MIE) and noninvasive ventilation device functioning and efficiency.
