Abstract
Significant abdominal pathology is common in the intensive care unit. This chapter will summarize how to use point-of-care ultrasound to diagnose some common pathology. Importantly, we will start with which probes to use and how to perform the studies needed to identify this pathology. This chapter will also review how to perform a FAST exam and how to look for other key pathology in the abdomen. It will also review the difference between the simple and complex fluid in the abdomen and how to safely access that fluid for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. We will review the characteristics of pneumoperitoneum, vascular injury, pelvic trauma, and abdominal compartment syndrome.
