Abstract

Specific characteristics of thumb ossification, different from those seen in the other digits, lead to unique injury patterns in the pediatric patient. Carpometacarpal fracture dislocations are rare in skeletally immature patients. However, Salter-Harris II fractures at the base of the thumb metacarpal are quite commonly seen. At the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint, simple or complex dislocations can be seen in the pediatric patient, along with bony collateral ligament injuries consistent with a Salter-Harris III pattern of injury. Other injuries that are commonly seen in the other pediatric digits are also frequently seen and treated similarly in the thumb. These common injuries include Salter-Harris II fractures of the proximal phalanx, phalangeal neck fractures, Seymour injuries, and tuft fractures.
