Abstract

Considering the changes in leisure behaviors, interests, intentions, and motivations in the digital society, this chapter aims to outline new directions in leisure research through a theoretical perspective of the relationship between leisure and well-being. Although the broad domains of self-presentation, social support, belonging, and connection related to one’s well-being are particularly well-aligned with online communities, they have not been adequately explored in relation to leisure practices. Furthermore, the benefits framework also needs to be modified given the changing socio-cultural context of the digital age. These areas deserve further exploration and require thick descriptions through interpretive discussions. Therefore, this chapter begins with a general remark about key theories and findings and then reviews empirical research on the benefits of leisure in the digital age and its relationship to well-being. Finally, the chapter outlines future development and prospect of theory in digital leisure culture, as well as future challenges and research areas.
