The first thing I noticed as I began to regain consciousness was the stench. It was that rotten egg smell like that section of the New Jersey Turnpike near Rahway. Second was the heat. Sweat was pooling on my chest. Third was the pain in my leg, as if I were being jabbed repeatedly by a pitchfork
