Abstract

This chapter describes an acute reaction occurring during transfusion of red cells. Several serious, potentially lethal, transfusion-related complications are discussed: transfusion of ABO-incompatible blood, bacterial contamination of blood products, anaphylactic reaction, and transfusion-associated pulmonary complications, all of which can initially present in a similar manner. Contamination of blood products with bacteria is described, as well as pathogen inactivation methods.
